Battling the Bulge – Facts & Fiction

By Dr. Victor Gong, Medical Director of 75th St. & 126th St. Medical, Ocean Pines Medical & Doctors Weight Control & Wellness centers, Ocean City, MD.

We've tried all of those diets in the past. Those ad's that just lure you in “Come in and lose 6 inches off your first visit.” Six inches off of what?

Many people have taken to those centers. They believe that you go in, do your exercise, buy your meals, and go home. Sure some lost the pounds, but most eventually get fed up with the programs and quit because of costs or other factors. Well the weight came back on, and in some cases, people gained more than what they started at.

Obesity is a growing disease that is sweeping the nation. Nearly fifty percent of the population in the United States are considered over-weight.

In 1992 medications as Redux and Phen-fen programs revolutionized the weight control field. Obesity became a recognized disease where drug companies now spend millions of dollars on research and development. However the abuse and indiscriminate use of these medications led to medical concerns of there safety.

There are however other things that need to be taken into consideration when starting these medications. It's not the medication alone that helps you lose the weight. It is the combination of proper nutrition, exercise, and behavior modification. You just can't sit in front of the television and eat a whole bag of cheese curls, take the medications, and expect to lose the weight. You need to change your whole thought process. There are no magic bullets to battle the bulge.

Most people join weight loss programs because they just want to lose 20 or 30 lbs before the summer so they can put on those bikinis or swim suits. Or their significant other wants them to lose the weight. But the fact of the matter is that obesity is unhealthy. Statistics show that obese individuals run a higher risk of heart disease, hypertension, stroke or respiratory problems, then those who are not obese.

Where do I find a safe and effective way to lose weight and keep it off? There are many options including dietary counseling, weight loss centers, physician directed programs, and numerous unsubstantiated products and services. So be careful and wise in what you chose.

Most weight control centers that are physician supervised require you to go through a variety of tests to make sure that you qualify for the medications. Believe it or not many people have been turned away from weight control programs because of various medical reasons or other disqualifying reasons.

First of all:

  1. Find a program that is physician supervised.
  2. Find out if there is nutritional, exercise, and behavior modifying counseling available.
  3. How do they monitor your progress. Do they do body measurements or a body fat analysis periodically.
  4. Check to see if the physician is associated with the American Society of Bariatriac Physicians.
  5. Is there a maintenance program to keep the weight off and under control, once you finish the program.

Some Weight Control Centers offer free screenings, and seminars, and will answer most if not all of your questions. They also offer a Body Fat Analyzer to see if you qualify for their programs. There are many new medical advances in the field of obesity, including a new generation of drugs to come. Obesity experts consider medications only a single tool in an entire war in this battle of the bulge.
